Welcome to Sacramento

Historic architecture, eclectic neighborhoods, and an amazing culinary scene

More than just the state capital, Sacramento is renowned for having a booming economy, a fantastic food scene, and eclectic neighborhoods. Unlike other famous California cities, it's more laid-back and slower-paced. It still has everything you expect from a big city, with reliable public transportation, its own airport, great restaurants, vibrant nightlife, and professional sports teams. In fact, you'll always find crowds of residents wearing Sacramento Kings gear on game nights.

Sacramento features a range of historical influences and architectural styles. Homes date back to 19th-century Spanish Colonial and Victorian homes in Alkali Flats, the city's oldest neighborhood. You'll also find historic Tudor, Bungalow, Prairie Style, and Colonial Revival homes built from the turn of the 20th century onward.

Surrounded by hills and mountains, Sacramento has plenty of outdoor recreational activities. You'll find tons of locals hiking one of the many trails in and around the city. For weekend getaways, Sacramento couldn't be more central. Lake Tahoe, Yosemite National Park, San Francisco, and Napa Valley are all within a one to three-hour drive.

What to Love

  • A wide array of architectural styles and living spaces
  • Fantastic selection of restaurants, breweries, and wineries
  • The booming economy and fast-growing technology industry
  • Highly-rated schools, colleges, and universities

Local Lifestyle

Part college, part techie town, Sacramento residents are social creatures who are always out and about. The bars and restaurants are always bustling, while the brewery scene is constantly growing due to high demand. Plus, everyone loves spending time outdoors.

Dining, Shopping & Entertainment

Known as the farm-to-fork capital of the world, Sacramento attracts foodies from all over to its diverse cuisine. There are over 1.5 million acres of ranch and farmland in Northern California, and chefs and restaurants take advantage of all the fresh local produce.

A local institution, Ella Dining Room and Bar, specializes in New American and French-style cuisine. They work closely with sustainable growers and ranchers and use only the freshest ingredients in their preparation. They have an elegant dining room, an al fresco patio, and an open kitchen where you can see the master chefs at work. Pair your dinner with one of their artisanal signature cocktails made by expert mixologists.

Another local favorite, Bacon and Butter, is a trendy cafe serving lunch and dinner. Using only the freshest ingredients in their farm-to-table menu, dishes change depending on the season. Many menu items are customizable to accommodate vegetarians. Even their cocktails are made with fresh juices.

For fine Italian dining, Il Fornaio specializes in homemade pasta dishes, wood-fired meat and pizzas, and fresh bread from their in-house bakery. Pair your dinner with a bottle of wine from their wine list, which has garnered a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence.

Mikuni boasts the best sushi in Sacramento, with a menu of a variety of fresh sushi, creative rolls, and fusion Japanese dishes. They have two locations: Mikuni in downtown and Mikuni | Arden Fair.

For shopping, Arden Fair Mall has over 150 shops, services, and eateries to explore. You'll find all the popular stores, including Sephora, Lululemon, and Abercrombie. For luxury brands, the Westfield Galleria at Roseville features higher-end shopping, as you'll find Gucci, Tiffany & Co, Louis Vuitton, and numerous other well-known brands.

Things to Do

Located on the west bank of the Sacramento River, River Walk Park is one of 200 parks in the city. It offers spectacular views of the city skyline. Residents often gather here for picnics, outdoor events, and special occasions. At the south end of the park, you’ll find the historic Tower Bridge.

You can catch the Sacramento Kings basketball team at Golden 1 Center. The arena has 34 luxury suites and 48 loft-style suites to cheer on your team. When the Kings aren’t playing, it hosts must-see world-class concerts, comedy acts, and the annual Long Live Cowboys Classic.

For over 165 years, the Cal Expo and State Fair has showcased everything the state has to offer. It's held over 17 days and is one of the top five most visited state fairs in the U.S., with attendance nearing one million annually. With everything from live concerts and fireworks to fantastic foods and a carnival, this is an event you don’t want to miss.

With its burgeoning brewery industry, Sacramento hosts several craft beer festivals every year. The Capitol Beer Fest features the nation's best breweries, plus food trucks and live music. In the fall, California Brewer's Festival is held at Discovery Park with a lineup of local breweries to explore.
