Modesto's Holiday Season Runs Down I Street. The Parade Turns at the Gallo Center's Corner.

At 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5, the first float of the Celebration of Lights Holiday Parade leaves 14th and I Streets and heads west toward 10th. At 10th it turns north. That turn happens at the 1000 block of I Street, where the Gallo Center for the Arts sits. Three and a half hours earlier, two matinees begin inside that building.

Modesto's downtown holiday season works this way all the way through. Most of it happens on a few blocks between 10th and 17th Streets, it builds for about two weeks, and the busiest day depends on a road-closure schedule that starts long before the parade does.

The order it happens in

The season starts outdoors on Saturday, Nov. 21. That's when Modesto On Ice opens its 2026–27 downtown rink, with skating every day through Monday, Jan. 18, 2027. The Halsey family owns and runs the rink. Sessions last 90 minutes, about 80 of them on the ice. Admission is $15 per session for ages 3 to 12 and $19 for ages 13 and up, and skate rental is included. Tickets went on sale Nov. 1. Session times change with holidays, school breaks, weather and private bookings, so the online ticket system is the place to check times, not a fixed schedule.

The Gallo Center's holiday run starts three days later and keeps going right up to parade day:

Date Show Time Theater
Tue., Nov. 24 Irish Christmas in America 7:00 p.m. Foster Family Theater
Sat., Nov. 28 Carpenters Christmas Songbook 7:30 p.m. Mary Stuart Rogers Theater
Sun., Nov. 29 Jake Shimabukuro Holiday Show 5:00 p.m. Mary Stuart Rogers Theater
Tue., Dec. 1 Christmas in Mexico! 7:00 p.m. Mary Stuart Rogers Theater
Fri., Dec. 4 She Loves Me 7:00 p.m. Foster Family Theater
Fri., Dec. 4 MSO Holiday Pops! 7:30 p.m. Mary Stuart Rogers Theater
Sat., Dec. 5 She Loves Me 2:00 p.m. Foster Family Theater
Sat., Dec. 5 MSO Holiday Pops! 2:00 p.m. Mary Stuart Rogers Theater

Holiday Pops! brings back Capathia Jenkins. She sings with Principal Pops Conductor Ryan Murray and the MSO Chorus. The Friday night show gives anyone who wants to keep Dec. 5 free for the parade a way to see the same program. Full listings are on the Gallo Center's events page.

Dec. 1 to Dec. 3 moves east, to the McHenry blocks

In the week before the parade, things shift toward 14th and 15th Streets. On Tuesday, Dec. 1, the McHenry Mansion Foundation holds its Christmas Tea at the mansion, 906 15th St. There are seatings at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., the cost is $40 per person, and reservations are taken by phone. That evening, Christmas in Mexico! starts at 7 p.m. at the Gallo Center, a few blocks west on I Street, so you could do both on the same Tuesday.

On Thursday, Dec. 3, Opera Modesto holds Season of Song: A Holiday Opera Ă  la Carte at 5:30 p.m. at McHenry Museum, 1402 I St. The ticket includes a buffet dinner, wine, performances, raffles and an aria auction.

The museum's address puts it at the same intersection where the parade lines up two days later. Both evenings that week happen on blocks that will be closed to traffic by Saturday afternoon.

Dec. 5 runs on the closure clock

Visit Modesto's parade listing gives three times that matter more than the 5:30 step-off.

  1. 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The City's Breakfast with Santa runs at the Modesto Senior Citizens Center, 211 Bodem St. Tickets are $10 per person, and children 2 and under get in free. The morning includes breakfast, Santa, stories from Mrs. Claus, crafts, letters to Santa and live music.
  2. 1:00 p.m. Road closures begin, starting with 14th through 16th Streets between I and H.
  3. 2:00 p.m. Both Gallo Center matinees start: Holiday Pops! in the Mary Stuart Rogers Theater and She Loves Me in the Foster Family Theater.
  4. About 3:30 p.m. Visit Modesto's holiday calendar shows the Holiday Pops! matinee ending at 3:30.
  5. 4:00 p.m. All closures are in place, covering 10th through 17th Streets between K and H.
  6. 5:30 p.m. The parade leaves 14th and I, goes west on I to 10th, north on 10th to J, then east on J to 17th.

Look at where the matinees fall. People arrive at 1000 I St. after closures have already started a few blocks east. The Pops! audience leaves about half an hour before the full closure zone takes effect around the building, and that zone covers every block from 10th to 17th between K and H. If you have a matinee ticket and want to stay for the parade, arriving after 1 p.m. and simply staying downtown may work better than trying to drive in for the show and back out for dinner.

The route also explains where crowds will gather. The I Street leg runs past the Gallo Center's block. The J Street leg, from 10th east to 17th, is the longest part of the route and passes the city's densest row of cafes.

This year's theme is "Winter Wonderland." Last year's parade was on Dec. 6, 2025, with the theme "Elves Just Want to Have Fun."

The J Street leg passes the cafes

The Modesto Bee's March 2026 roundup of local coffee shops lists several places right along the J Street part of the route or just off it. That makes them useful spots between a 3:30 matinee and a 5:30 parade, or for a warm cup while you wait.

  • Chocolate Fish Coffee Roasters, 1030 J St., opened in February 2026 in the former Preservation Coffee space.
  • Flora Cafe, 1101 J St., opened in 2025.
  • Penny University, 1202 J St.
  • The Queen Bean Coffee House, 1126 14th St.
  • Con Azucar Cafe, 1021 10th St., Unit C, on the 10th Street stretch where the parade turns north.
  • Lucille, 1218 H St., and Pure Grind Coffee and Juice Bar, 1006 H St., on H Street, at the northern edge of the closure zone.

Chocolate Fish opened in the months after last year's parade. That means the J Street walk on Dec. 5 passes a coffee roaster at 1030 J that wasn't there the last time the floats went by.

After the parade, the calendar spreads out

Once Dec. 5 is over, the season stops being concentrated in one place. The Gallo Center keeps a full schedule. She Loves Me continues Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. and then Dec. 11 to 13. Central West Ballet's The Nutcracker plays the Mary Stuart Rogers Theater on Dec. 11, 12, 13, 19 and 20. Nutcracker in Jazz! and Camila Fernandez Christmas both start at 7 p.m. on Dec. 18 in the building's two theaters. The Dave Koz 2026 Christmas Tour closes the run on Dec. 21 at 7:30 p.m.

The Modesto Symphony Orchestra's Holiday Candlelight Concert leaves downtown entirely. It's set for Tuesday, Dec. 15, at 8 p.m. at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, 1200 Maze Blvd.

The rink stays open the whole time and runs until Jan. 18, so downtown's outdoor anchor outlasts every show on the list.

Window Where it happens
Nov. 21 to Dec. 5 Downtown rink plus the Gallo Center run, building toward the parade
Dec. 1 to Dec. 3 McHenry Mansion and McHenry Museum, 15th and I
Dec. 5 10th to 17th between K and H, closed by 4 p.m.
Dec. 6 to Dec. 21 Gallo Center shows, with one MSO concert on Maze Blvd.
Through Jan. 18, 2027 Modesto On Ice

For a Dec. 5 with matinee tickets, the plan comes down to arriving downtown after 1 p.m., staying put after the 3:30 curtain, and walking to J Street before the floats turn the corner at 10th.
